The broad bean is a legume that was once cultivated for its protein-rich grains that are easy to store.
Immature grains can be steamed, while mature and dry grains are perfect for stews. The seeds are harvested between May and July. It is also often sown in gardens as a green manure, as it enriches the soil with nitrogen. The flowers are very decorative. It reaches a height of about 1 meter and can be grown in pots. It is native to the Mediterranean basin.
Broad beans are sown in February-March in rows 50 cm apart. Place one seed every 10 cm. The space between rows can be used for potatoes or tomatoes. Late sowings are attacked by aphids.
It is also possible to sow this variety in autumn to hasten spring growth: sowing from late October to late November. This is only possible in regions with mild winters.
