The garlic chive "Oriental Garlic" is a perennial plant particularly appreciated for its long, aromatic stems. Thanks to their unique flavor, with hints of garlic and chives, they are often used in Asian cuisine, particularly in stir-fries and soups. Their star-shaped white flowers, which appear in late summer, are also edible and highly decorative. They can be used to garnish salads, for example. Harvesting is continuous throughout the year. At harvest, the stems can reach a height of 30 cm.
Needs and requirements
Garlic chives are perennials with no specific water, fertilization or sunlight requirements. It thrives in all types of soil. It is frost-resistant.
Growing garlic chives
To grow garlic chives, sow the seeds in the ground or in pots between mid-March and mid-April or between September and October to a depth of 0.5 cm. Space rows 10 cm apart. As the plants develop, thin them out to 5 cm along the line. You can already use the thinned out plants in the kitchen! Protection with insect netting is recommended to protect plants from certain pests.
